Ferdinando Carulli (1770 - 1841): Complete Works for Guitar and Fortepiano. Performed by Massimo Palumbo (Fortepiano by Felix Gross, Vienna 1812) and Leopoldo Saracino (Six-stringed guitar by Gaetano Guadagnini 1820). Recorded some time during the early 1990's in the Assunta Church, Milan, Italy. [Brilliant Classics claims that the recordings were made in August 2002; that cannot be correct, because this is a licensed re-issue of 8 full-price CDs which originally appeared in the 90's on the Italian Nuova Era label in their series "Ancient Music"; my attention was first drawn to these recordings because the seventh CD in the series was awarded "Disc of the Month" status by a German Early Music magazine some time during the early 90's.] Re-issued at budget price as Brilliant Classics 92269/1-8. Total playing time: approx. 8 hrs. 10 min.

Elvis Presley changed the world when he spontaneously kicked an obscure blues number called "That's All Right" into high gear, providing as likely a starting point for rock & roll as anyone will ever be able to pinpoint. Spontaneity became harder to come by as Presley's career progressed, which makes this four-disc assortment of outtakes, alternate takes, and live recordings such a treat. Dating from the 1954 date that produced "That's All Right" to February '76 Graceland sessions, Today, Tomorrow & Forever captures every phase in Elvis's career--frequently from lesser-explored vantage points. Here's the super-charged hep cat of the '50s charging through versions of "Heartbreak Hotel," "I Got a Woman," and "Hound Dog" before a rollicking Little Rock, Arkansas, audience. Here's the matinee idol trying to breathe life into increasingly moribund material. Finally, here's the comeback kid of the late '60s and the flailing Vegas attraction of the '70s. Indeed, late-period Presley benefits particularly well when it's stripped down to its alternate-take essence. Colin Escott's rewardingly frank liner notes ("Elvis had good reason to sleepwalk through 'The Love Machine,'" he notes of one mid-'60s soundtrack throwaway) and a generous assortment of vintage photos complete a package that will certainly appeal to aficionados and will win over more than its share of non-devotees.

Can't Slow Down is probably Lionel Richie's best solo album, full of songs that would become hits--"All Night Long (All Night)," "Running with the Night," "Penny Lover," and "Hello." Like all of Richie's best music, the vocals are spare and the choruses inviting, with each track falling somewhere between straight-up pop and smoochy R&B.

Filmed on location at the Dormiton Abbey and on location in the Holy Land, Dream a Dream: Charlotte Church in the Holy Land was broadcast as a PBS special during the 2000 Christmas season. With a beautiful if inevitably immature voice and rather saccharine arrangements, Church performs a selection of favorite hymns, carols, and spiritual songs, including "The First Noel," "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing," "Silent Night, and "O Come All Ye Faithful." These are interspersed with short clips of the young singer discovering what it is like to wear traditional dress from the time of Christ, riding a camel and a donkey, and visiting locations associated with the Nativity, including the site some believe is the very place Jesus was born. Church is likable and natural in these sections, and given that program lasts only 48 minutes, it is a shame these were not extended. Fans of her albums will love this release, which is sure to be on Christmas lists for years to come.

Genre: Jazz, Blue

This blue-toned, straightforward visit with a mellow Tony Bennett is a grown-up rock video complement to the CD, with a small, cabaret-style intimacy that gives the illusion that Tony's in the living room, singing only to us. The casual, languid Bennett style is omnipresent as Bennett croons and skats his way through some of the greats, including "Body and Soul," "A Foggy Day," and of course that old standby, "I Left My Heart in San Francisco." Old and new styles collide in the second half when Bennett introduces his guest k.d. lang, whom he adds to his list of personal bests Billie Holliday, Edith Piaf, and Andy Williams. They duet on an undistinguished version of "Moonglow" that makes us wonder if Tony might not be mistaking lang for someone else. Fortunately Elvis Costello arrives to kick things into a higher gear and as the lights dim red, Costello and Bennett heat up the track with a nice, spirited rendering of "They Can't Take That Away from Me." Bennett then encores with "Autumn Leaves/Indian Summer" and dedicates the whole ball of wax to Duke Ellington. It's a smooth, practiced affair that has little sense of spontaneity, though Bennett tries hard to imbue it with his trademark throwaway ease. Of course, it helps immeasurably if you watch this entertaining DVD in full surround stereo.

Unplugged is a 1993 live album by Neil Young. It contains a previously unreleased song "Stringman", that dates from 1976. The taping of the show was also released on VHS.
The recording of this installment of the MTV series "Unplugged" was rife with tension, as Young was not happy with the performances of almost everyone in the band. In fact, the released version is actually the second attempt made at recording a set suitable for airing and release.
